A Marginalized Tradition
Most, if not all, 12-Step fellowships practice the Twelve Traditions. The seventh of these traditions is marginalizing in its foundation. See the following excerpt on the seventh tradition.
“Despite our misgivings, we had to recognize the fact that A.A. had to function. Meeting places cost something. To save whole areas from turmoil, small offices had to be set up, telephones installed, and a few full-time secretaries hired. Over many protests, these things were accomplished. We saw that if they weren’t, the man coming in the door couldn’t get a break. These simple services would require small sums of money which we could and would pay ourselves.” – Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions
A Marginalized Truth
This tradition of being self-supporting while declining outside contributions begs the question: Where does that leave those in financially poor communities unable to initially self-support their own Recovery let alone establish the facilities and materials needed?
To quote the newly released memoir, Black Recovery, “Most of those less fortunate don’t receive their ‘free’ Recovery opportunities until they reach jails or institutions.”

Marginalized Solutions
What is the solution to this marginalized tradition in Spiritual Recovery fellowships? Our solution here at the Hollywood and Vine Recovery Center is to establish the facilities needed for Recovery to happen; facilities that can and have become self-supporting through fellowship members’ own contributions.
Another part of our solution is bringing Recovery programs and fellowship meetings to group homes, continuation programs, shelters, and other youth and public facilities serving marginalized populations.
Additionally, our members actively seek out meetings that are in danger of losing their meeting space due to funding and do what we can to contribute as we work toward a greater solution.
The path to finding most answers in life begins with an understanding of the problem. That being the case, if you are reading this then awareness is being spread of a problem that is preventing access to a life saving solution from marginalized and poor communities. This is a good place to start…
